Milan is off to the twin harbours of the North Island’s West coast, Aotea and Kawhia. It’s early in the season, so it’s a gamble if the fish are there to play ball. March-April is usually the best time for chasing the few and big harbour kingfish, so anything that pulls line would be a massive bonus.
The first catch of the trip is the mussel rope but luckily things improve from there. Milan is working with the tides, exploring outcrops and spots of foul all around the harbour to find the hiding snapper and elusive kingfish.
As Milan gradually increase the size of the hooks, the size of the snapper increase as well ....and ends up with a stingray.
Stocked up on live mullet, Milan drives over the hill to Kawhia harbour. With the perfect bait, the chances of meeting the big king are as good as they will ever get.
At his favourite spot, all efforts are tuned to the max and Milan is preparing for a double hook up. Suddenly, it all happens and the Tristram 600 Inshore turns into the base of an incredibly intense battle between angler and fish. At the end, one ends up beaten badly, but who will it be?
